Miami Beach has launched an initiative to distribute 5,000 free date-rape drug detection cards to help combat drug-facilitated sexual assault during high social activity periods like spring break. According to NBC Miami, these cards can detect substances such as Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and Ketamine by changing color when they come into contact with a spiked drink.

The cards can be obtained through the Miami Beach Police Department’s Goodwill Ambassadors or at the department’s lobby located at 1100 Washington Avenue. The city has purchased 5,000 of the Miami Beach Police Department-branded detection cards. Miami Beach Commissioner Laura Dominguez told WSVN, “Date rape is a serious problem everywhere, and I’m proud to have championed this effort to reduce the number of potential victims," and noting the alarming statistic that "an estimated 11 million women in the nation are believed to be survivors of rape while under the influence of alcohol and drugs."

The city has also warned the public about the limitations of the detection cards. They only detect GHB and Ketamine and may produce false positives with certain drinks, including blue-colored beverages, milk products, cream, oily liquors, some fruit juices, and even some waters. NBC Miami advises not to consume any beverage that results in a positive reading on the cards.

Resources for individuals who have experienced sexual assault are available through organizations like the National Sexual Violence Resources Center and the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline at 800-656-4673.
