As of today, the case of the three missing brothers from Morenci, Michigan, reaches a significant milestone as their mother, Tanya Zuvers, has requested a legal declaration of their presumed death. The Skelton brothers—Tanner, Andrew, and Alexander—went missing in 2010 at ages 5, 7, and 9, The Detroit News reported.
The request by Zuvers to declare the boys deceased, filed in December 2023, represents a significant development in a long and challenging process. "This decision came after much thought & discussion with my family & friends," Zuvers posted on a Facebook page dedicated to her sons. "It did not come lightly and was definitely a difficult decision to make. No parent wants to lose a child, but to have to have the courts step in and declare them deceased is just unfathomable," according to The Detroit News.
The case has seen multiple delays, but finally proceeds under Probate Court Judge Catherine Sala. Authorities have long suspected the boys’ father, John Skelton, who is serving a 10-to-15-year sentence for unlawful imprisonment in connection with their disappearance. Skelton's account has been inconsistent, including claims that he handed the boys over to an organization to protect them from their mother, though no evidence of such a group has been corroborated, as cited by hoodline.
The probate court hearing, which started last Saturday and continues today, includes testimony from Zuvers and investigators in Lenawee County. The witness accounts describe years of searches and ongoing efforts despite the challenges, as per The Detroit News.
"Heartbreakingly, none of that has occurred," R. Burke Castleberry, attorney for Tanya Zuvers, said in a court filing, highlighting the ongoing search for answers. The community continues to remember the boys, with a plaque in Morenci commemorating their memory, according to AP News.
