Milton's City Hall became a hub for environmental stewardship conversations last week, as locals gathered to shape the future of the city's waste management. The meetings, designed to be as much about listening as informing, laid the groundwork for a strategy expected to steer the city’s recycling and waste efforts for years to come. Public Works Director Sara Leaders, together with Allison Trulock of NewGen Strategies and Solutions, took residents through the paces of crafting a responsive Recycling and Solid Waste Management Plan (RSWMP).

According to coverage of the meetings by the City of Milton, participants were apprised of the five primary objectives of the forthcoming RSWMP, which include bolstering recycling and diversion rates and improving curbside recycling services, among other goals. The dialogue was robust, with residents weighing in on enforcement measures for haulers, and the prospect of diversifying hauling services to possibly include separate entities for different waste types.

The numbers laid out were stark; an average Milton household generates 1540 pounds of solid waste and 420 pounds of recycling annually, a tandem pushed to the forefront of concerns as the community anticipates continued growth. Organics management and the promotion of sustainable practices received a spotlight during the discussions, emphasizing the city's commitment to fostering a more eco-conscious Milton.

Feedback from the lively sessions, will permeate the RSWM's final draft, a document not meant to directly catalyze policy change, but to direct city leaders on well-supported environmental actions according to the City of Milton release.
