In an innovative step to enhance the mobility of its residents, the Milwaukee County Transit System has broadened the scope of its Transit Plus paratransit service, introducing last-minute wellbeing trips into its same-day ride pilot. This development allows approximately 5,000 eligible Transit Plus riders to book trips on the same day, a feature that was previously unavailable, as reported by the Milwaukee County Transit System.
When the pilot launched in September 2024, it tested the waters of urgent trip service—an initiative that has since secured an enviable customer satisfaction score, based on rider feedback, of 4.7 out of 5, according to Milwaukee County Transit System. This program's expansion comes as a direct response to the recognition that people's day-to-day needs often include more than just pre-scheduled appointments or job-related travel, venturing into the realm of immediate necessities such as grocery runs for missing household items.
Advocating for this user-centric approach, the testimony of a local mother speaks volumes. "Due to her medical condition, my daughter occasionally forgets to schedule her ride the day before and this program has been a huge resource for her. Recently, she forgot to schedule a necessary ride, and having a same-day option greatly reduced her anxiety. I’m very excited about this option and impressed by the service,” Sonia Broughton shared in an interview obtained by the Milwaukee County Transit System.
Director Fran Musci conveyed, "At the launch, we predicted there would be adjustments to the pilot as we learned more. That’s why, going forward, the pilot service will also transport riders to wellbeing meetings, appointments, and life events that come up on short notice." She further elaborated that their standard ADA van service remains available to accommodate scheduled travels that are determined in advance, as per the Milwaukee County Transit System.
The Milwaukee County Transit System's Same Day Pilot Program offers rides every day from 7:00 a.m. to just before 6:00 p.m. Riders can book through the Same Day Pilot app or by calling (414) 946-6318. The cost for a one-way trip is $10, and personal care attendants can ride for free. A companion can join for an extra $10. Riders need to show their Transit Plus ID, and cash payments are accepted on board (exact fare only). The program will run until the funds are used up, expected by fall 2025.
