Residents of Minneapolis, particularly those in Ward 12, can look forward to a series of community events that promise to shape the neighborhood's landscape and communal memory. A significant focus surrounds the effort to rename Edmund Boulevard after it was learned that its namesake, Edmund G. Walton, had enforced racially restrictive covenants in the area. According to a government bulletin, the Ward 12 Office is inviting locals to a meeting to discuss this initiative and the potential new street name on March 22, at Longfellow Recreation Center.
In the effort to renounce the discriminatory history, as the Ward 12 Office states, they will assist a community-led coalition named Reclaiming Edmund through a community engagement survey. Engaging in a year-long outreach, the group has been educating neighbors about the need to change the name of Edmund Boulevard. "The neighborhood coalition feels strongly that the name of Edmund Boulevard should be changed," reported the office, and they have performed outreach and engagement extensively among their neighbors and community members. Participants can provide their feedback by scanning a provided QR code or visiting the provided link.
Additionally, on March 18, there will be a community meeting to discuss the future of Cooper Playground with the Minneapolis Public Schools and Longfellow Community Council. By attending the meeting, locals can expect to get updates on the Cooper School Site, as detailed in the announcement. The gathering will be held at Bethlehem Church, aimed at bringing together community insights and forging a path forward.
The office's prior commitment to fostering community dialogue was also evident in their recent Community Office Hours, held on Valentine's Day. Residents had an opportunity, while sipping their coffee at Rick's Coffee, to engage directly with their representatives in an informal setting. "I had a wonderful time connecting with many of you," the office recounted. They added a light-hearted note, expressing enjoyment of the "singing Valentine, it was a welcome and heart-warming surprise."
Intrigued citizens eager to meet their Ward 12 representative and discuss matters important to them, another set of Community Office Hours is slated for March 21 at Cafe Ceres. Those interested in direct dialogue with their local officials will find an ideal setting between 9AM and 10:30AM. For further details on these events and to stay connected with community matters, residents are encouraged to follow the updates from the Ward 12 Office.
