Heads up to the drivers planning to navigate the ribbon of Interstate 70 next Thursday: MoDOT has announced a partial closure to take care of some bridge maintenance near Cooper County's mile marker 93. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the eastbound passing lane over the Lamine River is slated for a temporary shutdown on March 27, from the morning bell of 7 a.m. until the shadows lengthen by 4 p.m.
It’s not just the lane closure, either. Vehicles will need to squeeze through a 14-foot width restriction in the work zone. For those counting on a swift journey, consider this a gentle nudge to recalibrate your expectations: Delays are almost a certainty. The good folks at MoDOT advise a healthy dose of caution, a slow pace, and an eye on the road signs to skirt any mishaps. They ask all motorists to play their part by strapping in safely, ignoring the siren call of mobile phones, and giving those road signs the attention they merit.
All this hustle on the highway is, of course, at the mercy of Mother Nature. Should she decide to frown down upon us that day, MoDOT assures us that the work schedule could change. But let's hope she keeps smiling so that the good work can ensure our safe travel on the I-70.
In the meantime, MoDOT sends out a plea to the public: Help them help you by buckling up. Put your phone down—for real this time. Listen to what the traffic signs are telling you, and when you see work zones with folks in hard hats and fluorescent vests, ease up on the gas and give them space.
