The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has commenced a significant phase of the Improve I-70 Program with the latest groundbreaking in Foristell for the Warrenton to Wentzville expansion. The groundbreaking ceremony saw MoDOT officials, accompanied by state and local delegates, as well as the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission and the contracted team assembling at the defunct eastbound I-70 weigh station to mark the occasion. "Today marks another historic milestone in MoDOT’s efforts to Improve I-70," said Vice-Chairman W. Dustin Boatwright of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission, emphasizing the significance of this project not only to the local community but for all those traversing Missouri.

Envisioned as a once-in-a-generation development, this expansion is part of a broader initiative to modernize nearly 200 miles of I-70. The state's FY2024 budget has earmarked an impressive $2.8 billion of General Revenue for this purpose, with this particular stretch – from Blue Springs to Wentzville – receiving funds totaling $600 million, marking it as the heftiest single contract in MoDOT history. Construction is slated to begin in spring 2025, with an estimated completion date around the tail end of 2028.

The scope of work assigned to the Design-Build contractor team, the Improve 70 Alliance, is expansive. It entails adding a third lane in both directions on I-70 from Warrenton to I-64 in Wentzville, replacing the old I-70 lanes with new concrete, revamping interchange systems, and enhancing outer roads in Warrenton, Wright City, Foristell, and at Route Z. Furthermore, the plans include the realignment of the railroad bridge that lies between Wentzville Parkway and Route Z, as well as an extension of the third lane on I-70 and I-64 to Route K. The team is committed to maintaining two lanes open for traffic during peak hours to minimize disruption.

These upgrades aim to bolster the infrastructure while addressing the demands of the increasing traffic volumes. According to a statement obtained by MoDOT, the improvements will not only benefit resident Missourians but also smooth the journey for those passing through.
