The arrival of new modular homes for wildfire survivors in Lahaina is expected to cause traffic disruptions in the coming week. According to an announcement from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, commuters should anticipate potential delays as these homes will be transported nightly from the Kahului staging area to the Ka Laʻi Ola housing site. Hauling is set to begin at 9 p.m. from Wednesday through Friday.
Specifically, these modular units will journey from near the Kahului small boat ramp, making their way to Lahaina along a designated route. Motorists might want to plan to possibly avoid certain roads during these times, as HDOT has advised that there might be traffic slowdowns due to the sheer size of the transported homes. Convoys of trucks will be transporting these units, ushered by traffic escorts to ensure a smooth transition to their final destination.
Route details provided by HDOT include a turn from Kahului Beach Road onto Kaʻahumanu Avenue, followed by a right onto Hāna Highway, and a further turn onto Elmer F. Carvalho Way. The journey proceeds on Kūihelani Highway and eventually onto Honoapiʻilani Highway, with the final stretch including a right turn at Leialiʻi Parkway near the Lahaina Civic Center.
Prior to nighttime hauling, the modular homes will be transported from Kahului Harbor to a temporary staging site, with movements scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow and again on Wednesday. This pre-hauling process will follow a route from the harbor onto Kaʻahumanu Avenue, turning right before arriving near the Kahului small boat ramp. Drivers may experience brief stops in both directions during these hauls. The public is encouraged to stay updated on any scheduling changes by checking HDOT's social media feeds on Facebook and Twitter.
The state's initiative to house wildfire survivors shows progress in the form of these modular homes, aiming to restore a piece of the life that these residents have lost to the elements. HDOT urges highway users to heed all signs and to follow directions from traffic controllers during transport dates. The disruptions, while inconvenient, are part of a larger effort to provide swift relief and stability to those affected by past wildfires in the region.
