Residents around Maui can expect to see a sizeable convoy making its way from Kahului to Lahaina soon, as part of an effort to deliver modular homes for wildfire survivors. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that roadways will be populated with trucks carrying these homes nightly beginning at 9 p.m., from Wednesday, through Friday. These houses are slated for the state's Ka Laʻi Ola housing site in Lahaina, as reported by the HDOT.
The expected route will have the trucks starting at the staging area by the Kahului small boat ramp and then traveling along Kahului Beach Road (Route 3400). They'll proceed to Kaʻahumanu Avenue, making a right onto Hāna Highway, followed by a right to Elmer F. Carvalho Way, eventually linking to Kūihelani Highway. From there, the convoy is to take a left onto Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30) and head straight to Lahaina, according to HDOT's route announcement.
Transport of the modular units will likely cause traffic delays, with motorists advised to expect slowdowns and stops. The oversized nature of these transports means the traffic disruptions could be significant, and drivers along the route are urged to follow all posted signs and directions from traffic controllers. Additionally, there will be escorts to safely guide the transport through the highways and byways to its destination.
For those looking to stay informed on the hauling schedule and any potential updates, HDOT suggests keeping an eye out on their social media pages, specifically on Facebook and Twitter [@DOTHawaii]. Preparatory hauling to position the modular homes will also occur tomorrow, and Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., as the units are moved from Kahului Harbor to the temporary staging site adjacent to the Kahului small boat ramp. This initiative represents a critical step towards providing much-needed housing to those affected by wildfire disasters on the island.
