Tragedy struck in Monroe this weekend, as UCSO Animal Services deputies started an investigation into a case of severe animal neglect. A local woman, identified as 22-year-old Amorette Smith, was arrested after it was discovered that her two cats died due to her failure to provide basic care.
The investigation was initiated after deputies received a tip about the dire situation with Smith's pets. One of the cats had already perished, and the other was in such critical condition from neglect that veterinarians were left with no choice but to euthanize it, according to a statement from the Union County Sheriff's Office. Deputies learned that Smith confined the animals to a bedroom for over a week without sufficient water, leading to their untimely deaths.
Smith now faces charges for her actions, with two counts of Felony Kill Animals by Starvation brought against her. After her arrest, she was taken to Union County Detention Center. Her bond was set at $5,000, which she has posted, as detailed by the Union County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation into this matter is ongoing, with UCSO Animal Services continuing to seek any additional information. The public has been urged to come forward with any details that might assist in the case. To report suspected animal mistreatment or to provide information on this incident, people are encouraged to contact the UCSO Animal Services at (704) 283-3789 or, in urgent cases, to directly dial 911.
