Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich is set to engage with residents through a series of Community Conversations, announced to discuss the county's long-term priorities and the upcoming Fiscal Year 2027 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) budget. According to a Montgomery County press release, these events are slated to occur across various regions from late March to May, providing platforms for the public to voice their input on the county’s capital projects and budget priorities.
The initial meeting will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. on March 31 at the Wheaton Community Recreation Center. Scheduled to span over six sessions, these conversations are a biennial occurrence, allowing residents to influence county decision-making on significant undertakings, such as education facilities, parks, and transportation developments. "I invite residents to participate in the process and attend one of our community conversations to give their thoughts on the County’s capital projects and budget priorities," Elrich said in a statement, highlighting the need for public engagement in shaping county infrastructure decisions.
Innovations and improvements within the CIP extend to several areas including Montgomery County Public Schools, affordable housing, the environment, public safety facilities, parks, and recreation and library facilities. The gatherings not only serve as forums for sharing perspectives but also as a mechanism to review all County capital projects. Elrich emphasised the importance of the sessions, explaining that they enable the integration of community ideas into the development of the proposed FY27 Capital Budget and the six-year CIP.
Each meeting will feature a presentation by County Executive Elrich followed by breakout sessions led by County staff, covering a range of topics such as education – encompassing both Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery College, the environment – involving the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), general services – managed by the Department of General Services (DGS), parks – under the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC), recreation – from Montgomery County Recreation (REC), and transportation – overseen by the Department of Transportation (DOT). After the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with experts from these sectors.
The full schedule for the FY27 Citizens Advisory Board CIP Community Conversations includes various locations ranging from community centers to a virtual forum. These meetings represent an opportunity for engagement and transparency, as the county navigates its fiscal and structural priorities for the coming years, reflecting the collaborative ethos that underlies Elrich's approach to governance.
