Blocked paths—from a car parked carelessly to a narrowing residential lane—can cause life-saving services to arrive late. With MFRD crews responding to over 20,000 calls last year, the importance of clear access is underscored by the volume of their work. Vehicles that aren't parked correctly create problems by slowing down response teams when every ticking second counts toward saving homes, improving medical outcomes, or even saving lives, said Fire Chief Mark McCluskey in the MFRD Facebook post.
Fire Marshal Brian Lowe went on to explain what responsible parking looks like: keeping fire lanes and hydrant zones clear, avoiding double parking, allowing space at curbs and intersections, and maintaining clearance in apartment and commercial areas—especially during adverse weather conditions that may bring additional debris and blockages. Lowe emphasized that although parking can sometimes be challenging, the priority is clear: "A small parking inconvenience for one person can cause a big delay for someone needing emergency help," he said in the department's announcement.
