Nashville's Department of Emergency Communications has cemented its status as a leader in the field of public safety with its recent APCO recertification. The recognition reflects the high standard of training that the emergency telecommunication staff receive, a crucial component for professionals tasked with handling high-stakes situations on a daily.
The evaluation process for the recertification was no walk in the park, as it required a deep dive into the department's education framework—ranging from its curriculum and training gadgets to the policies governing their operation. The assessment also looked at the qualifications of those heading the classes, scrutinizing whether they were adapting to the high-tech changes sweeping across the industry. "Nashville DEC’s recertification demonstrates our commitment to training telecommunicators who handle emergencies with professionalism and expertise," Patrice Coleman, Assistant Director for DEC, told Nashville.gov.
In 2024 alone, the DEC Training Division chalked up more than 26,973 hours of tailor-made instruction for its staff, placing it high among organizations that prioritize skill enhancement and career growth.
This summer, the dedication shown by the Nashville DEC will be on full display as they receive recognition at the APCO International Conference in Baltimore, MD.
