
Nashville Vice Mayor Angie E. Henderson has been chosen to join the 2025 class of the Smart Growth America's Complete Streets Champions Institute, which aims at shaping urban infrastructure to promote healthier communities, according to an announcement by Smart Growth America. As one of fourteen locally elected officials selected nationwide, Henderson partook in the institute's first meeting today, engaging with peers to master urban design principles conducive to active living.
The Champions Institute equips participants with skills to advocate for and implement Complete Streets policies which enhance safety and health for all modes of transit; the program delves into planning, design, policy, and project execution via virtual learning sessions and the lessons are shared across the network to foster better practices among cities, Nashville's Vice Mayor Angie E. Henderson shared, in a statement detailed by City of Nashville, "I enjoyed meeting my fellow institute members this morning,” shared Vice Mayor Henderson, “this work will be a great opportunity to gain new perspective and insight from other cities." Upon completing the program, these local leaders are expected to serve as advocates, applying gained knowledge to forward infrastructural reforms.
Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) Director Diana Alarcon congratulated Henderson, emphasizing the department's commitment to fulfilling the city's multimodal ambitions and looking forward to collaborating with Henderson on advancing 'complete streets' in Knoxville.
