Last night's routine traffic stop in New Smyrna Beach escalated quickly as officers discovered a homemade explosive device in the vehicle. As reported by FOX 35 Orlando, the incident occurred on the eastbound lanes of State Road 44 between Old Mission Road and Myrtle Avenue, prompting a temporary road closure while authorities secured the scene.
Handling the precarious situation, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad safely removed the said device, ensuring the safety of all involved, with no injuries being reported. The driver, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. While negotiating traffic, the bomb squad's adept officers were called to defuse the threat, underscoring the unpredictable nature of police work.
As the situation unfolded, the public displayed cooperation, for which the local police expressed gratitude. "We appreciate the public's patience and understanding during this incident," stated the New Smyrna Beach Police Department in their social media update.
