New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a notable move recently, appointing Randy Mastro as the city's first deputy mayor. Mastro, acclaimed for being a top-tier lawyer and a seasoned veteran in government service, has been lauded for his commitment to social justice and his long history of advocating for civil and constitutional rights. According to NYC's Office of the Mayor, Mastro is set to leverage his extensive experience in the service of the city's nearly 8.5 million dwellers.
The Adams administration has, over the last three years, had a prolific streak – passing three on-time, balanced budgets, enhancing job figures, ushering record levels of housing, and masterfully guiding the city through crises including the COVID-19 pandemic. To further amplify these efforts, Mastro will work closely with Mayor Adams and other key senior officials, aiming to deeply embed improvements in all aspects of New Yorkers' daily lives. Mayor Adams emphasized that this appointment is a commitment to building on the achievements delivered for New Yorkers, highlighting Mastro's remarkable legacy as a valuable asset for the city's future.
Speaking about his new role, Randy Mastro expressed gratitude and determination to keep pushing the city toward prosperity. "Like so many New Yorkers, I love this city and want it to succeed. So much has been accomplished for New Yorkers during this administration when it comes to public safety, job growth, and affordable housing. I look forward to continuing to deliver a safe, affordable city and to improving quality of life for all New Yorkers. I believe now, in particular, is a time to heed the call to public service, and I am excited to answer the call," Mastro said in a statement, as obtained by the NYC's Office of the Mayor.
Mastro is no stranger to the corridors of power and public service. With a tenure as deputy mayor for operations and chief of staff in New York City between 1994 to 1998, his efforts to combat organized crime and advocate for progressive policies are part of his storied career. His service garnered accolades and widespread respect, with past headlines acclaiming his achievements and dedication to the city. As reported by the official press release, Mastro's legal expertise was especially highlighted when he received the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award for his work in the landmark racketeering suit against the International Brotherhood of Teamsters during his time in the U.S. Attorney's Office.
