Olumide Olorunfunmi, a 39-year-old Nigerian national, stood before federal court in Charlotte and confirmed his role in a money laundering operation that duped over 125 victims out of upwards of $4.5 million, according to a report from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. The complex web of deceit stretched from romance scams preying primarily on the elderly to business email compromise schemes that duped the unwary. Special Agent Robert M. DeWitt of the FBI's North Carolina office underscored the gravity of the crime, joining U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson in delivering the news of Olorunfunmi's guilty plea.
The plea revealed an intricate scheme, where Olorunfunmi, alongside his two compatriots now awaiting sentencing, Samson Amos, and Emmanuel Unuigbe, exploited the vulnerabilities of their victims from 2020 through 2023. Court documents detail how these criminal masterminds directed their prey to wire money to various U.S. and international bank accounts under their control. From these funds, the trio siphoned off a portion for themselves, benefiting from an illicit exchange rate operation within Nigerian territory – maneuvering monies through the shadowy corridors of the "black market".
Both of Olorunfunmi's accomplices pled guilty to their roles in this grand financial charade, with Amos conceding to conspiracy for running an unlicensed money transmitting business, while Unuigbe admitted to both money laundering conspiracy and the same charge as Amos. Their collaborative efforts fueled a machine churning out fraud, setting gear upon gear into motion, a fiscal apparition ensnaring the lessening defenses of the lonely and the compromised.
As testament to their financial machinations, the funds upon receipt would weave through a labyrinth of other bank accounts, geographically scattered yet meticulously interconnected. Olorunfunmi himself, while standing in the court's stark light, owned to his participation in this ploy “from 2020 through 2023,” according to documents from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
