The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources recently dispersed an impressive wave of grant funds totalling nearly $1.2 million to 58 counties across the state as part of the America 250 NC initiative. With these funds, local communities are set to enhance cultural heritage through a variety of projects including cultural events, exhibits both physical and digital, historical markers, and more, each inspired by North Carolina’s contributions to and reflections on America's revolutionary history.
"These America 250 NC grants will help local N.C. communities to more fully participate in the nationwide commemoration of our nation’s founding," stated DNCR Secretary Pamela Brewington Cashwell, "We look forward to working with communities across the state to build a memorable and meaningful celebration for all North Carolinians." This round of funding follows an earlier disbursement, which in June 2024 allocated nearly $900,000 to 34 counties, adding up, between the two rounds to a robust $2.1 million in grant funds spread among 74 counties, as per the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Details on the current awardees, which are available online, reveal the substantial reach of the program amid a wider effort to prepare for the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding in 2026. This milestone will be centered on the signing of the Declaration of Independence and encapsulates the birth of a nation fundamentally designed around the premises of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," according to the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
The effort to mark 250 years since this pivotal moment in history is as much about looking back as it is about the present gaze – inviting a contemplation on how far the American experiment has come, the obstacles overcome, and the milestones reached, from the Halifax Resolves to the contemporary reflections on civil rights and beyond. America 250 NC's mission, led by the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, engenders a statewide commitment to reflection and education around these ideologues and histories. With no additional grant opportunities currently planned, this second round signifies the completion of this particular funding initiative.
