For those accustomed to pulling off at the northbound I-5 Scatter Creek Rest Area in Thurston County for a break from the road, be ready to adjust your travel plans. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), this popular pit stop closed its doors on February 10 at 8 a.m. and isn't set to reopen until 5 p.m. on March 6.
The closure, while an inconvenience to some, is part of a much-needed update to the facility's water system. WSDOT reported that the work will include "Installation of new well pumps and pipes," "New automated water management systems," and "Repairs inside and outside of the restrooms." The upgrades aim to not only reduce long-term maintenance costs but also extend the service life of the system.
Opened in 1969 and rebuilt in 1989, the Scatter Creek Rest Area is frequented by approximately 2,284 vehicles daily. With amenities like water fountains, restrooms, picnic areas, and an RV wastewater disposal area, the facility has been a convenient respite for weary travelers.
For those with recreational vehicles needing to responsibly dispose of wastewater, WSDOT advises the nearest disposal is 32 miles west on State Route 8 at the Elma Rest Area in Grays Harbor County. To stay informed about the progress of the upgrade and other state road work, WSDOT is encouraging travelers to sign up for email updates or to get real-time travel information from the WSDOT app and statewide travel map.
