O‘ahu motorists, mark your calendars for traffic detours as the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a full closure of Fort Barrette Road. According to HDOT, the closure extending between Kapolei Parkway and Franklin D. Roosevelt Avenue will enable reconstruction of existing railroad crossings and lighting improvements. The disruption is set to commence on next Monday, stretching across eight days of work.

The reconstruction will occur over weekdays beginning next Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., requiring motorists to stitch together alternate routes. Also, the road will remain closed continuously over the weekend, ushered in at 8 a.m. next Saturday, and unwound not until 6 p.m.next Sunday. As work is due to gear up again on March 24 with a regimented daytime schedule, detours will direct traffic via Kapolei Parkway to Kamokila Boulevard and onto Franklin D. Roosevelt Avenue.

The scope of construction activity is comprehensive, scheduled to install new concrete crossing panels, upgrade lighting on Fort Barrette Road, and refreshing pavement markings among other enhancements, as detailed by the transportation department's announcement. Special duty police officers have been enlisted to both oversee traffic control and ensure safety during the affected hours.

HDOT has taken steps to ease the inevitable disruption, posting electronic message boards to keep the public informed of the upcoming changes. "HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities," according to a statement from HDOT. For additional details on alternate routes and a more comprehensive list of lane closures throughout the state, visitors can consult HDOT's website.
