In a recent legal development, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald has requested a Pontiac judge to strip Kelli Bryant, a mother accused of significant neglect towards her children, of her communication privileges from jail. The reason behind this motion, reported by the Detroit Free Press, is due to Bryant allegedly defying a court-ordered mandate to cease contact with her children and their current caregiver.
The violations, occurring between March 8 and March 12, involved Bryant reaching out to the caregiver ten times, and even going as far as enlisting other inmates to place calls on her behalf, according to records cited by The Detroit News. These actions come in direct contravention of the orders set by judges fearing the mother might continue to impart fear tactics, or attempt to persuade the children against cooperating with the authorities.
Bryant is currently held on a $50,000 cash bond after initially being given a bond as high as $250 million, attributable to her eluding responsibilities and the potential threat she poses to the children. Astoundingly, the 34-year-old is facing charges of first-degree child abuse and welfare fraud linked to the discovery of her three children living in harrowing conditions in a Lydia Lane home, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
Karen McDonald conveyed the gravity of the situation with clarity, "Kelli Bryant has clearly and repeatedly violated the judge’s order not to contact the victims or their caregiver," as told to the Detroit Free Press. This order was anchored firmly in the intent of protecting the victims from any further harm that Bryant’s direct or indirect contact could precipitate. The children, now with a relative, were allegedly abandoned for years in a derelict house with no basic sanitation, reliant on sporadic food deliveries for their very survival.
The degradation that the children had to live through was stark; their health was compromised, with signs of prolonged neglect evident in their inability to perform ordinary tasks, such as using personal hygiene items or flushing a toilet. This residence of nightmares was discovered on February 14 after the landlord raised alarms over unpaid rent and lack of contact with Bryant, as identified by CBS News Detroit. Authorities believe the children were left to fend for themselves somewhere between 2020 and 2021, a detail that underscores the extent of their isolation and neglect.
Bryant's next court appearance is scheduled for April 15, where the motion to cut off her communication privileges will likely be addressed further. Should the prosecutor's motion pass, Bryant will be prohibited from using a tablet, telephone, and video communication devices at Oakland County Jail. This measure aims to secure the safeguard of the children from any potential influence or intimidation that might deter their well-being or the integrity of ongoing legal procedures.
