An Odenton man, Nicholas Giroux, 36, has pled guilty to the murder of his neighbor, an amateur boxer named Isaiah Oludayo Olugbemi. According to a release from the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office, the crime, which occurred last summer outside Olugbemi's townhome, came to an end in court Friday when Giroux admitted to both First-Degree Murder and Felony Use of a Firearm in a Violent Crime. The sentencing is now firmly set for April 22.
State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess described the victim as a "rising talent in boxing with a bright future ahead" and noted his role as a father. She stated, "The Defendant shot Mr. Olugbemi multiple times, at one point, returning to continue gunfire. This plea holds the Defendant accountable for this senseless crime and I hope that it brings some peace and justice to his family and friends." Giroux faces a sentence of Life in Prison plus 20 years, a significant term meant to reflect the severity of the offense, as cited by the Arundel County State's Attorney's Office.
On the night of June 17, 2024, Anne Arundel County police responded to a report of a shooting in the 500 block of Meadow Mist Way. There, they found Olugbemi with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being airlifted to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Olugbemi's injuries proved fatal. The Chief Medical Examiner's determination that the death was a homicide was a definitive step in sparking a full investigation.
Video surveillance was key in shaping the case, showing Giroux approach Olugbemi with a handgun before shooting him multiple times. According to video evidence, even after Olugbemi fell, Giroux returned to fire three more shots. Witness accounts, the video footage, and police records were critical in identifying Giroux as the assailant. When confronted by police, Giroux confessed to the murder and led them to a bag containing the 9mm handgun used in the shooting.
Assistant State's Attorney Carolynn Grammas pursued the prosecution of this case, with Judge Richard R. Trunnell presiding over the court proceedings.
