With the seat for Oklahoma City's Ward 7 up for grabs, candidates Camal Pennington and John A. Pettis, Jr. are preparing to confront each other in a runoff election scheduled for Tuesday, April 1. The ward, which spans a significant portion of NE Oklahoma City, is experiencing a moment of political transition, sparked by the stepping up of its former representative, Nikki Nice, to the Oklahoma Senate in late 2024, as reported by the City of Oklahoma City.
According to the City of Oklahoma City announcement, voters within Ward 7 will have the opportunity to cast their ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the day of the election, as the individuals fight to fill the vacuum left by Nice's departure, Councilman Lee E. Cooper, Jr., has been serving in an appointed capacity to provide continuity of representation and will continue to do so until the new councilperson is sworn in. In a move to encourage voter turnout, EMBARK bus and OKC Streetcar services will offer free rides on all routes to ease the journey for those endeavoring to exercise their democratic right.
The Oklahoma City Council operates on a nonpartisan basis and comprises nine members: the mayor holds a citywide mandate, while each of the eight Wards elects a councilmember to voice their concerns and interests. They shoulder the responsibility of steering the city through a council-manager form of government, contributing their voices on a part-time basis. As per the City of Oklahoma City, the mayor stands to earn an annual salary of $24,000, with each councilmember drawing a salary of $12,000.
