
A catastrophic break at the Sardis Lake Water Authority's water treatment plant is forcing thousands of customers across rural southeastern Oklahoma to conserve water while crews scramble to make repairs. The utility is asking customers to avoid watering lawns, doing laundry, filling pools, running dishwashers, washing vehicles, and any other non-essential water use until the plant is back online.
The break, which struck the plant on Tuesday in Pushmataha County, has hampered the authority's ability to produce and distribute water to its service area, according to KTEN. Water production is expected to return to normal roughly 12 hours after the outage was first reported, per the station's report, though officials have not detailed exactly which component failed.
It is the second consecutive utility failure to hit the system in as many days. Just a day earlier, on August 24, crews with the Sardis Lake Water Authority were already dispatched to a separate water main leak along Highway 43 that triggered low pressure and localized service disruptions across the area.
A System Already Stretched Thin
The Sardis Lake Water Authority, based in Clayton and governed by a board chaired by Rayna Noah with plant operations managed by Chris DeWeese, serves roughly 5,500 residents and businesses spread across Pushmataha, Latimer, Atoka, and Pittsburg counties. The utility doesn't just serve its own customers directly — it provides wholesale water to the Town of Clayton, Pushmataha County Rural Water Districts #1 and #5, and Latimer County Rural Water District #2, meaning a single plant failure ripples outward to multiple communities at once.
This week's breakdown also lands during a stretch of extreme summer heat, with local temperatures reaching 102 to 105 degrees, conditions that tend to push water demand higher just as the aging system is most vulnerable. The current plant is limited to processing about 1 million gallons of water per day, a ceiling that has become increasingly difficult to maintain as the region has grown.
Relief Is Coming, But Not Yet
The timing is notable: just three weeks before this week's break, representatives from the Choctaw Nation-led funding push announced more than $30 million in combined funding from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, USDA Rural Development, and the Oklahoma Water Resources Board to build a new water treatment facility for the authority. That new plant is designed to expand capacity from the current 1 million gallons per day to 3.3 million gallons per day, a jump intended to stabilize service for the entire four-county region.
That funding builds on earlier state and tribal support aimed at keeping the legacy plant limping along. In February 2024, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board approved $3.29 million in American Rescue Plan Act grant funds, matched by the Choctaw Nation, to rehabilitate the existing water intake, plant building, chemical feeds, and standpipe. The federal Rural Utilities Service also awarded the authority a $6.1 million grant in March for additional rural infrastructure improvements.
A Pattern of Equipment Trouble
This week's break isn't an isolated incident in the plant's recent history. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality issued a mandatory boil water order for the Sardis Lake Water Authority and its wholesale customer districts in July 2025 after equipment malfunctions caused elevated turbidity levels in treated water. Together with this week's plant break and Monday's separate main leak on Highway 43, the pattern points to a legacy system under sustained strain even as long-term upgrades move forward.
The authority's water ultimately draws from Sardis Lake, a reservoir created in 1980 on Jackfork Creek by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that holds 274,333 acre-feet of storage capacity and operates under a 2016 water settlement agreement among Oklahoma, the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations, and Oklahoma City. For now, customers across Pushmataha, Latimer, Atoka, and Pittsburg counties are being asked to hold off on non-essential water use until the utility confirms the plant is fully back online.
