In a recent move to formally recognize the often-unseen efforts of state workers, the Oklahoma Senate passed a resolution to celebrate the dedication of over 33,000 state employees. Senate Resolution 3, authored by Senator John Haste, honors these individuals who work diligently behind the scenes, playing crucial roles in everything from public safety to education. As reported by the Oklahoma Senate website, "Our state employees are the backbone of Oklahoma’s government," Senator Haste emphasized.
The resolution, which was officially adopted on March 4, not only acknowledges the everyday commitment of these workers but also solemnly remembers those who have paid the ultimate price in their line of duty. Among them, was Jaden Jackson, an Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) Heavy Equipment Operator, who was tragically struck and killed while carrying out his duties on December 30, 2024. According to the same Senate release, Haste noted, "His tragic passing is a solemn reminder of the risks many of our state employees face every day in service to Oklahoma." Jackson's story is a poignant illustration of the hazards that can accompany the pursuit of maintaining the state's infrastructure and well-being.
Jackson's death marks him as the 62nd employee from ODOT to lose their life while working along Oklahoma highways, a vivid testament to the dangers these workers may encounter. The resolution by the Senate aims to not only honor such sacrifices but also to bring forth a renewed appreciation for the critical work done by state employees. Through these actions, Haste said, "We honor his life and the impact he made on those around him," as noted by the Oklahoma Senate website.
Through the passage of Senate Resolution 3, Oklahoma legislators have chosen to formally express their gratitude to an often-overlooked segment of its workforce. The intention, as per the words of Senator Haste, is “Oklahoma is better because of the commitment of our state workforce," as mentioned on the Senate website.
