In a recent incident that has sparked widespread condemnation, a man in Orange County has been detained on charges of animal cruelty. The individual was caught on surveillance footage tossing an injured cat, now known as Willow, into a dumpster behind a Laguna Hills shopping center. According to KTLA, the cat was discovered 15 hours later, just minutes before the dumpster was scheduled for trash collection.

After the incident, Mission Viejo Animal Services (MVAS) took to social media to spread the word and sought the public’s assistance. The cat's owner subsequently identified the suspect, whom she claimed was her roommate, "Through our social media, the cat owner came forward and identified the man was her roommate seen in the video, and we conducted an investigation and have probable cause that the suspect was in violation of animal cruelty," MVAS Supervisor Kyle Werner explained, as reported by CBS Los Angeles. Authorities arrested the suspect on Wednesday, shortly after the surveillance footage was released.

The heart-rending footage disclosed by MVAS showed a light-blue or gray Volkswagen Tiguan pulling up near the dumpster on Monday around 7:20 p.m., from where the man emerged, carrying a white garbage bag with Willow inside. The case took a positive turn when Willow was found by MVAS personnel and immediately taken for medical care at a local animal hospital, suffering "from obvious trauma," as noted by NBC Los Angeles. Willow is expected to make a recovery and has been showing "immense affection" to the veterinary staff treating her injuries.
