Oregon has sent 26 firefighters to assist with wildfires in North Carolina, in response to the support Oregon received during its wildfire season in 2024. The Oregon team arrived on Monday to aid local firefighters as dry conditions and winds continue to spread the fires. The Oregon Department of Forestry stated this was an opportunity to "return the favor," following North Carolina’s assistance last year, as noted by KGW.
Blake Ellis, Fire Operations Manager in Oregon, emphasized the importance of mutual aid agreements in managing wildfires. He said, "Being able to have an additional incident management team made it so we did not have to make the hard choice of prioritizing one fire over another," as mentioned by KOIN. In 2024, Oregon received support from North Carolina to handle multiple fires. These partnerships with other states and some territories in Northwest Canada help quickly deploy resources, improving fire management and response.
The Oregon team is in North Carolina for a two-week rotation to assist with the current fire season, which has caused hundreds of evacuations. “We were able to fill both incidents’ needs due to the extra support from our North Carolina partners,” Ellis told KPTV, referring to the mutual aid during last year's crisis in Oregon.
