A tragic incident unfolded early Wednesday morning when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the collision occurred on Boulder Highway, just north of Tropicana Avenue, around 5:15 a.m.
Initial investigations revealed that a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by 41-year-old Guillermo Macias Mercado of Las Vegas, was traveling southbound when two pedestrians attempted to cross the highway. Despite the crosswalk signal displaying a 'don't walk' indication, one of the individuals, 56-year-old Maria Reyes Macario, also from Las Vegas, ventured into the path of the oncoming vehicle. The driver responded by applying the brakes and swerving, but sadly, contact was made.
Reyes Macario was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and is reportedly facing critical injuries as a result of the accident. Mercado, who stayed at the scene, was not suspected of impairment and passed his field sobriety tests, as noted by authorities.
As the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Collision Investigation Section continues to delve into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event, they are piecing together the narrative of a morning that changed the lives of all parties involved. While Mercado faces no immediate charges.
