
A pedestrian was killed yesterday in a collision involving a 2025 Chevrolet Trax, marking the 35th traffic-related death in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction this year, an official report confirms. The incident occurred early in the morning on S. University Center Dr. just north of E. Twain Ave. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the vehicle was eastbound on Twain Avenue when the driver, identified as 38-year-old Gerardo Lopez, ignored a solid red traffic signal and ultimately struck the pedestrian.
The collision was reported at approximately 8:44 AM, witness statements and video surveillance played a crucial role in reconstructing the unfortunate series of events the Chevrolet veered off eastbound Twain Avenue, making a northbound turn onto University Center Drive, where it proceeded to veer onto the sidewalk and hit the pedestrian, who has yet to be identified. After the impact, the vehicle reentered University Center Drive and came to a stop. Medical personnel swiftly transported the victim to Sunrise Hospital Trauma, but despite life-saving attempts, the individual succumbed to their injuries.
Gerardo Lopez, along with the passenger Zulma Lopez, were reportedly uninjured; nonetheless, Mr. Lopez showed signs of impairment at the scene and was taken into custody facing relevant charges. The passenger, 59-year-old Zulma Lopez, also stayed at the scene following the incident, and neither of the vehicle's occupants was injured in the crash.
