The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision involving Mauricio Perez-Hernandez, 30, earlier this month near the 7400 block of E. Independence Boulevard. The accident occurred at around 8:26 p.m., involving a 2019 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van driven by 71-year-old David Queen.

As per the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department release, officers responded to a call about an accident with personal injury and found Perez-Hernandez unresponsive on the roadway. Queen was located on the right side of the road and did not require medical treatment. Perez-Hernandez was taken to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The CMPD's preliminary investigation suggests Perez-Hernandez was crossing outside of a crosswalk and was struck by the van. Neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors for Queen, though impairment may have contributed to Perez-Hernandez's actions. Perez-Hernandez was pronounced dead on Monday last week at 5:54 p.m. by medical staff at Novant Presbyterian.

The investigation remains open, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is seeking additional information from witnesses. Those with information are encouraged to contact Detective Sessoms at 704-432-2169, ext. 3, or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
