Pennsylvania Turnpike Launches Real-Time Text Alert Service for Drivers Facing Unexpected DelaysSource: Photo by melissa mjoen on Unsplash

Drivers in Pennsylvania dealing with unexpected delays on the Turnpike now have a new tool to keep them informed. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has introduced a texting service to provide real-time updates to motorists caught in unforeseen traffic backlogs. According to CBS News, by texting "info" to 47676, users can receive automated messages detailing incident specifics, estimated clearance times, and ongoing roadway conditions.

The text service operates by utilizing GPS to confirm the driver's or passenger's location requesting information. In a statement detailed by PA Turnpike, a representative noted that while the service cannot immediately lift drivers out of a backlog, it can provide timely reassurance that the situations are being managed. The service delivers updates approximately every 15-20 minutes until the incident resolves.

"We take immense pride in maintaining safe, clear roadways on the PA Turnpike," PA Turnpike COO Craig Shuey stated, per the WGAL report. Despite the launch of this service, drivers are reminded of the upcoming implementation of Paul Miller’s Law in June, which will prohibit the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Motorists must adhere to this and other laws when using the new text update service.
