The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has shared somber news of the passing of their beloved retired K-9, Reggie. In a post on their official Facebook page, the PCSO recounted Reggie's years of dedicated service from 2015 to 2021 prior to his retirement. Born in Slovakia in 2014, Reggie was more than just a dog; he was part of their team, a dual-certified Patrol and Explosive Detection K-9 whose secured the safety at high-profile events and successfully apprehended 97 suspects throughout his career.
The significance of a Reggie's contributions resonated through the community, particularly in his protective presence at major gatherings such as Gasparilla, Toronto Blue Jays Spring Training, Epiphany celebrations, and the St. Pete Grand Prix. "But those who knew Reggie remember him for much more than just his professional accomplishments," stated the PCSO's Facebook tribute. Loved far beyond the call of duty, Reggie's personality earned him several nicknames among his fellow handlers, such as "Reggie Hammond" and "Dancin' Bear," the latter inspired by his unique way of responding to targets during training exercises.
Reggie's intelligence and characteristic calmness made him a standout member of the law enforcement family. The canine was known for his escapism, managing to outwit kennel locks and doors with Houdini-like proficiency, much to the amusement and sometimes befuddlement of his handlers. These antics, along with his service record, rendered Reggie a memorable figure within and outside the PCSO.
The PCSO's statement not only commemorates Reggie's professional achievements, but it also expresses condolences to Sergeant Kilian and his family, with whom Reggie shared a close bond. "Reggie wasn't just a K-9 - he was a beloved partner, friend, and member of our law enforcement family," the PCSO noted.
