Yesterday, the Placer County Superior Court hosted a status conference where significant revelations about Stephenson’s case surfaced. According to a social media post from the Placer County District Attorney's Office, Liberty Healthcare, the contractor for the Department of State Hospitals (DSH), has retracted its prior approval of Stephenson's readiness for release. Moreover, a DSH doctor has signaled their intention to request the cancellation of Stephenson's imminent release.
Caught in the midst of these proceedings, a suitable location that had been under consideration for Stephenson’s residence is now off the table. The DA's office plans to press the court to rescind the order, which would grant Stephenson a conditional freedom. Reflecting the gravity of the situation, another court session is slated for March 17, aiming to establish a date for a formal hearing, as reported by the DA's Facebook update.
This turn of events follows a community meeting called by the Placer County DA's Office on February 28, intended as a platform for residents to engage with the intricacies of Stephenson's placement. The gathering, which took place at the Placer County Community Development Agency, was marred by concerns over the withholding of critical details by DSH and Liberty Healthcare. Officials vented their frustration: "Without adequate information in advance of the meeting, committee members are unable to prepare or provide meaningful feedback during the closed session," as obtained by Hoodline.
Further complicating the issue, DSH only agreed to share the proposed address for Stephenson's housing on the condition that the housing committee members consent to a gag order, effectively barring them from disseminating this information to other vested parties. The stance adopted by DSH and its contractor came under scrutiny from the community and legal officials alike, especially considering the delicate balance of community safety and an individual’s path to reintegration. To stay abreast of the developments, the public has been encouraged to sign up for updates via the Placer County DA's case portal, which remains a crucial point of real-time information amidst a sea of confidentiality and legal maneuvering.
