Kelli Bryant, a 34-year-old mother from Pontiac, has found herself under the weight of additional legal charges, this time for welfare fraud. These allegations come on top of her current first-degree child abuse charges related to the neglect and abandonment of three of her children. The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office claims Bryant fraudulently collected $29,397 from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services between January 2022, and February 2025, according to CBS News Detroit.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said, "The defendant appears to have effectively abandoned her children while collecting their public assistance," as per Mid-Michigan Now. "This crime is, first and foremost, a theft from Kelli Bryant’s children." If convicted of the welfare fraud charge, which pertains to any unlawful acquisition over $500, Bryant could face up to four years in prison, and/or a $5,000 fine.

The investigation into Bryant's activities took a decisive turn when authorities, responding to a call from the landlord, uncovered the dire living conditions of her children in a Pontiac home. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the landlord had not received rent since October and had not seen Bryant since December 2024. Inside the residence, officials found the environment littered with garbage, mold, and human waste, and all three children showing severe signs of neglect.

The wellbeing of the children, a significant concern for authorities, has been brushed aside by Bryant who, while providing some sustenance, left her offspring without basic sanitary supplies or education. "The children survived on food that was dropped off on the front porch each week by either their mother or a stranger," according to the disturbing details reported by FOX 2 Detroit. With Bryant's bond reduced from $250 million to $50,000 on a recent Friday, the legal process takes its next step while the children, one can assume, begin their long process of healing and recovery.
