A tragic incident occurred in Port St. Lucie over the weekend when a woman died following a backyard bonfire accident. According to CBS12, the Port St. Lucie Police Department responded to a call about a burn victim last Saturday, shortly after midnight.

When officers arrived at SE Rainier Street, they found 55-year-old Karyn Patricia Alva Torres with severe burns. It is believed that she was using an accelerant to light the bonfire, which caused her injuries. Despite family members' attempts to put out the flames with a water hose, Torres had already sustained burns to 80 to 90 percent of her body, WPBF reports.

Torres was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where it was confirmed that 97 percent of her body was covered in burns. Tragically, she died from her injuries hours later. Her husband also suffered burns on his hands and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
