As a powerful storm system made its presence known across Southern California, residents in Pico Rivera experienced an unexpected event when the National Weather Service (NWS) received reports of a possible tornado early Thursday morning, according to NBC Los Angeles. With hefty winds and steady rainfall having barraged Los Angeles County overnight, it seems the late winter storm may have brought more than just rain to the region.
The reported tornado sighting occurred around 3:15 a.m. near the El Rancho neighborhood, mentioned ABC7, which also noted that downed trees and power lines littered the Pico Rivera streets in the aftermath, although substantial damage to homes appeared to be avoided and no injuries have been reported.
Details about the Pico Rivera event unfolded as daylight exposed the swept-away foliage and a tree ominously leaning on a home's rooftop. Another, given to fitful rest, split at the trunk, bringing to the forefront the sheer unexpected muscle of late winter's fury, "We'd been talking about the potential for tornados in this area for days in advance," Ariel Cohen of the NWS shared with NBC Los Angeles.
