Memphis was beset by powerful winds that ruthlessly uprooted trees, impacting residents all over the city. Yesterday, strong winds uprooted trees, with one falling onto homes on North Parkway. This tree caused "extensive damage to both" of the houses it fell upon, as reported by Action News 5. Another uprooted tree fell into the road at South Parkway and Willett, which was then sectioned and moved off the thoroughfare.
The same storm system led to a tree falling onto a house in the 1000 block of North Parkway just after 9 p.m., according to WREG. The incident injured a woman and reportedly necessitated rescue efforts, as the tree struck the resident’s vehicle and a neighbor’s house. There currently isn't an update on the injured woman’s condition, but it is known that she was taken to the hospital. The homeowner whose house was directly hit said the strong winds also created a separate crisis, knocking out power for over 12,000 MLGW customers across various communities, including Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, and Millington. As the gusts were expected to relentlessly continue into the night, residents were reminded to report outages to the MLGW Outage Hotline or check the MLGW Outage Map for updates.
Subsequent to the incident, a GoFundMe page has been set up to aid the family affected by the tree fall. Those wishing "to help the recovery" can find the donation page online, further noted by a FOX13 report. On the scene, the FOX13 crew observed the debris cluttering residences, with the massive tree obliterating the front access to one home and damaging another significantly enough that one homeowner felt prudent to go to a hospital as a precautionary measure. The incident also affected personal property, with that same homeowner relating to FOX13 that his car suffered damage due to the tree's descent.
