Today, Provo City is gearing up to celebrate the 10th Annual Provo Women’s Day Luncheon at the Provo Recreation Center. The event boasts an inspiring roster of speakers and the presentation of the Trailblazer Award. This year, it draws inspiration from Taylor Swift's album, "Fearless", reflecting on the notion of courage and resilience displayed by influential women in the community. In a statement obtained by the City of Provo, Mayor Michelle Kaufusi expressed, "Women’s Day is a time to honor the contributions of the incredible women in our community," said Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi. "This year’s theme, Fearless, reminds us of the courage and resilience of women who push boundaries, overcome challenges, and inspire those around them."
The event is tipped to be a prime spot for networking and empowerment, focusing on the accomplishments of local women. Individuals slated to speak include Satu Kujanpää, founder of Preloved's innovative thrift store, and Kristin Andrus, who spearheaded the nonprofit Gathering for Impact. Completing the line-up is Courtney Wayment – a former four-time national champion and Olympic athlete with Brigham Young University's track and cross-country teams. These women have been chosen to exemplify dedication and to provide attendees with impactful narratives of their journeys.
The luncheon will highlight the awarding of the Trailblazer Award, which was introduced in 2020 to coincide with the centennial of the 19th Amendment. Mayor Kaufusi noted in a publication by Provo City, "Kaye Nelson is the perfect example of what it means to be a trailblazer," lauding her immense contribution to conservation efforts across Utah. Nelson's work includes pivotal roles in safeguarding sites such as Bridal Veil Falls and Utah Lake, ensuring these natural treasures remain intact for future enjoyment and reflection.
An added educational component sees Utah Valley University’s Advanced Event Production class (HM 4250) partnering to assist with the festivities. Students are set to apply their classroom knowledge in a practical setting, taking up crucial tasks in marketing and logistics. According to Professor Jessica Ballard, the students' involvement is dual-faceted; they're managing to gain real-world experience while contributing to an event that uplifts women in Provo.
Post-luncheon activities include a Women’s Day After-Party, mirroring the energy of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. This segment will offer guests interactive experiences such as friendship bracelet making, vision boards, and Taylor Swift karaoke, along with a spread of unique food and drinks featuring local vendors like Floss Cotton Candy.
