A Rancho Cordova neighborhood witnessed a tense scene Thursday night as a knife-wielding man barricaded himself in his home, prompting a standoff with law enforcement that lasted for several hours. According to a social media post by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when officers responded to a report of a potential domestic violence situation on the 10000 block of White Rock Road. Rey Martinez, 52, reportedly chased a mutual friend with a knife following a verbal altercation with his wife, who, along with the couple's child, safely fled the residence before police arrival.
The standoff initiated after Martinez rejected to surrender to deputies and barricaded himself inside the residence. The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail, including SWAT and the Critical Incident Negotiations Team, was deployed to the location to manage the crisis. Martinez was said to have been intransigent throughout the ordeal, at one point daring deputies to "kill him". The protracted engagement with law enforcement came to a close just before 1:30 AM, as Martinez was finally taken into custody inside his home.
Upon detainment by the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail and a K9 unit, Martinez required hospital treatment for injuries sustained during the apprehension process. "Martinez was transported to the hospital for treatment from the K9 apprehension, after which he will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail," the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reported. A booking photo of Martinez will be circulated once the booking process is complete. The specifics of the charges Martinez will face are currently undisclosed.
