A fire ignited at Axis Apartments on Glengarry Drive in South Nashville, leading to the evacuation of numerous residents Sunday morning. The Nashville Fire Department responded just after 11 a.m. to calls of the blaze, which was eventually contained, as reported by WKRN.
Upon arrival, crews witnessed people leaving the building and smoke billowing out, prompting an immediate search for the fire’s origin and efforts to clear the building. According to a resident's account in WSMV, the honking of a work van followed by the sight of smoke coming from a deck alerted them to the danger. "I was in my room, and when I left the living room, it was full of smoke," recounted Axel M., a tenant who was able to rescue his dog and escape the flames with his family.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire, as fire crews systematically evacuated the affected residents. The Red Cross has been on scene providing assistance to those displaced by the incident, confirmed both by WSMV and WKRN.
A testament to community strength was observed as neighbors reportedly came forward to help each other evacuate the building. Axel told a WSMV interview that he alerted his first-floor neighbor, Sofi, as the fire reached their floor. Firefighters continued to work through the afternoon in order to extinguish hot spots and prevent further spread of the fire, which has been classified as a two-alarm event by Fox 17.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and at this time, there has been no official word on what may have sparked the devastating event. The extent of damage to the building and the number of units impacted have not been disclosed.
