A tragic scene unfolded in Trenton, Michigan, yesterday when a welfare check led police to discover a retired police officer dead and a woman critically injured. The Trenton Police Department responded to a call at the Pinehurst Condos on Elmhurst Drive, initiating the welfare check at approximately 7 a.m. Upon entering the home with keys provided by a family member, officers found the deceased man and severely injured woman.
As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, the deceased man was identified as Jeffery Vamos, a retired Flat Rock officer who had served from 1996 until his retirement in 2017. The condition of the injured woman, also a resident of the condo, remains critical. Police, still early in the investigation, are treating the incident as domestic, and they have yet to publicly speculate on the exact sequence of events that led to the death and injury.
According to CBS News Detroit, several guns were found inside the home, adding a complicated layer to the ongoing investigation. Neighbors expressed their shock and concern, noting the unexpected nature of the violent incident in what is described as a typically quiet community.
"I saw all the ambulances, the police cars. I wasn’t even sure where they were. But then I saw they were at their house," neighbor Chris Carney stated, as per ClickOnDetroit. Carney further described Jeff as a person who showed aggression but was also "very kind at other times." Carney said, "It’s sickening. I mean, it’s really sickening, and she was well-loved by everybody." The hope for the woman's full recovery was emphasized amidst the community's dismay.
