Last Friday, 2025, the justice system handed down a sentence that represents the gravity of one man's violent actions against a woman he once dated. According to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, Josani Goree received a prison sentence of 57 years and 4 months for a series of heinous crimes, including forcible rape and domestic violence.
During the trial, evidence was presented that detailed the chilling events that unfolded in October 2024. In an attempt to end the relationship, the victim faced a night of terror at the hands of Goree. She was strangled and hit, and her phone was damaged when she tried to call for help, which highlighted the manipulative control and violence Goree exerted over her. Despite her efforts to use pepper spray and escape, Goree managed to subdue her, taking the victim to an apartment where the assaults continued unabated.
The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office reported that Goree was found guilty on October 9, 2024, by a jury on multiple counts, including "forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sodomy by force, domestic violence, terrorist threats and damaging a wireless device." The DA's Domestic Violence Unit prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Celeena Winston, handled the prosecution effectively, presenting evidence that left no room for doubt in the eyes of the jury.
During the sentencing, The Honorable Amy Holliday handed down the lengthy prison term that undoubtedly reflects the grave nature of the offenses. The crimes not only left the victim with physical injuries—bruising, redness, and swelling as noted in the conducted exam- but also an undeniable impact on her psyche and sense of safety. The DNA evidence collected from the victim, which the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office stated matched Goree, solidified the case against him, sealing his fate.
