Southern California is prepping for a spell of inclement weather. As the National Weather Service in San Diego forecasts, residents can expect "cool and cloudy" conditions, "light to locally moderate precipitation," and snow levels dipping to 3,500 to 4,000 feet by Monday morning. The NWS alert hints at a slight chance of mountain thunderstorms this evening following the arrival of colder air aloft. In San Diego County, brace for more rainfall than your northern neighbors.
Travelers should be wary, too. The I-15 through the Cajon Pass and I-8 near Crestwood Summit may see some snow action. Odds are favorable for at least a dusting along these routes. Strong gusts are expected to sweep across the region until Monday evening, with certain desert mountain slopes possibly facing gusts up to 60 mph. A Wind Advisory has been extended accordingly, and the marine conditions aren't much calmer, with "west to northwest winds of 20-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots" through Monday night, per the NWS San Diego's forecast discussion.
Some respite is coming Tuesday with the promise of lighter winds and no precipitation, although temperatures are expected to linger below normal. But don't get too comfortable; another trough system is set to move in by Wednesday, possibly carrying more precipitation through Friday. Snow levels will initially be around 7,500 feet before dropping. The NWS anticipates a slight uptick in wetness relative to the Sunday/Monday system, meaning it might be a good time to ensure your rain gear is ready.
It might be wise for beachgoers to stay on dry land for a bit. Higher surf and strong rip currents are anticipated until Monday evening, with surf potentially reaching 10 feet. The High Surf Advisory stays in force until Monday night, bringing a high risk of rip currents to coastal regions. As always, cautious optimism is advised for the weekend as forecasts suggest an approaching ridge could usher in warmer, dryer conditions, with temperatures possibly climbing above average. However, another trough and potential rainfall could be on the horizon late Sunday or Monday.
