San Diego residents are bracing for a wet and windy week ahead, with the National Weather Service predicting a series of storms to hit the area. Starting Monday night and persisting through Friday, precipitation will return, possibly bringing heavier downpours, lower snow levels, and widespread gusty west winds associated with the system arriving late Wednesday, according to information from the NWS San Diego.
The NWS detailed forecast for today anticipates sunny conditions with a high near 67, shifting to a 40% chance of showers after 11 pm tonight. However, it was the National Weather Service that shed light on the possibility of precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch come Tuesday. Such wetness will likely persist through the end of the week, with a cooler-than-usual trend. Highs on Tuesday are only expected to reach near 61 amid showers and the potential of isolated thunderstorms, especially over the higher terrain.
Midweek may offer a brief respite as temporary ridging brings intermittent showers before another shortwave trough deepens, signaling a more significant and colder storm system. "Another significant shortwave trough will deepen and advance towards
the region, which is appearing to have the potential to bring some substantial rainfalls to portions of the inland valleys and higher terrain," reported the NWS San Diego. By Thursday, snow levels could drop between 3000-3500 feet, and some mountain areas above 6000 feet could receive over a foot of snow.
Marine conditions are also set to worsen, with southeast winds increasing early Tuesday, prompting a Small Craft Advisory. By Thursday, strong southwest, later northwest, winds could strengthen into probable gales, leading to hazardous boating conditions. Beachgoers should also be wary, as consecutive swells could elevate surf and generate high rip current risks. "A series of swells associated with a couple of storms will arrive this week," the NWS San Diego advisory noted, with the potential for thunderstorms and lightning strikes Tuesday afternoon and early evening.
