The intersection at Clairemont Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard will soon be a nighttime symphony of excavators and welding torches, courtesy of the Pure Water Morena Conveyance South & Middle and Conveyance Bike Lanes project. Work crews will kick off next Sunday, installing twin pipelines essential for connecting Morena Pump Station to University City's pipeline grids, according to a notice from the City of San Diego.
The hustle will happen under the moonlight, from 9 p.m. to the crack of dawn at 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. Those who navigate these roads expect detours during those hours, though the intersection will be traffic-ready during daytime. A map the city provides outlines alternate routes to keep you moving sans major hiccups. You don't have to worry – driveways will still be accessible, even as the ground is split open and the pipelines laid down. Anticipate around six weeks of this pattern, barring any weather-related spanners in the works.
What's the point of all this nocturnal activity? The city's Pure Water Program aims to create a sustainable water supply by transforming recycled H2O into potable water. It's an effort to quench San Diego's thirst without breaking the bank or the environment. According to the notice, once the pipelines are snugly in place, temporary paving will cover the trenches, teeing up for the next construction phase. Eventually, this will lead to streets getting a full facelift and revamping from curb to curb.
