San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins has announced a jury conviction against 23-year-old Jose Guevara-Espinoza for carjacking and robbery, crimes that have been a concern across the Bay Area. Guevara-Espinoza faced charges related to a series of incidents last April involving the armed theft of vehicles. The conviction, as detailed by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, includes carjacking (PC 215(a)) with a verified firearm use during the crime (PC 12022.25(b)) and one count of robbery (PC 211) also with the firearm use allegation found true.
In a show of interdepartmental cooperation, Jenkins thanked the San Francisco, Berkeley, Daly City, and Oakland Police Departments for their collaborative efforts in this successful prosecution. Evidence and testimony presented during the trial revealed that on April 16, 2022, around 9 PM, Guevara-Espinoza, armed with a gun that had an extended magazine and laser, alongside an accomplice, coerced a victim into surrendering his car keys and wallet on the 3700 block of Fillmore Street.
Fearing for his safety, the victim complied and subsequently used an Air-Tag and a BMW mobile application to trace his stolen 2018 BMW towards Oakland. Within half an hour, dashcam footage captured Guevara-Espinoza in the victim’s car, swapping license plates with another vehicle. Oakland Police later found the BMW with Guevara-Espinoza's clothing inside, and a search warrant at his residence uncovered a firearm, matching clothes, and another stolen vehicle.
Assistant District Attorney Angela Roze, who spearheaded the prosecution effort along with her team, revealed as per the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, "I want to thank the jury for their careful consideration of the evidence in this case and returning a just verdict that holds Mr. Guevara-Espinoza accountable for his actions. This verdict sends a message that violent crime will not be tolerated in our city." Six hours before the Fillmore Street incident, Guevara-Espinoza engaged in similar criminal behavior in Berkeley, and not even two weeks later, he struck again in Daly City, corroborating the pattern of violent carjacking the prosecution outlined.
With the guilty verdict delivered, Guevara-Espinoza remains in custody and awaits a May 2 hearing to set a sentencing date.
