A San Jose body shop owner is now facing a charge of insurance fraud following what officials describe as a revealing undercover operation coordinated by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. The accused, 49-year-old Jairon Escobar, owner of Radiator & Body Parts, stands accused of inflating damage estimates for a deliberately dented bait car, purportedly adding fictitious repairs amounting to thousands of dollars.

Escobar, who has a 2017 fraud conviction on his record, was arraigned yesterday, facing a felony attempted insurance fraud charge; if convicted, he could find himself behind bars again, as the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office reported. Escobar's business was ensnared in a broader sting effort conducted last May by the Organized Auto Insurance Fraud Task Force, which includes the DA's Office, the California Highway Patrol, and the California Department of Insurance. They used a Toyota Camry supplied by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which only had a minor dent in detecting fraudulent practices among body shops.

"Auto insurance fraud drives up premiums and hits drivers in their wallets," Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said, as per the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Rosen sternly warned body shop owners that fraudulent actions seeking illegal profit could lead to encounters with undercover officers, ultimately not worth the risk of losing one's freedom.
