The City of Sandy Springs Fire Department is stepping up to tackle health care access issues head on with the official launch of its Community Paramedicine Program. This initiative stretches the arms of emergency medical services beyond the swift response to 911 calls, focusing instead on improving healthcare access, diminishing the need for hospital visits, and preventing crises by offering preventative and follow-up care. A move that's as practical as it is compassionate, aiming to fundamentally reshape the landscape of emergency health services.
Led by Paul Long, the newly minted program is in the capable hands of a seasoned veteran with over a quarter-century of experience on the front lines of pre-hospital and community care. Joining the city in November 2024, Long's impressive resume includes a history of working with Atlanta-area fire departments and health services. He arrives on the scene as an IBSC board-certified Community Paramedic, a rare accolade shared with only 25 other individuals in Georgia, according to the information released by Sandy Springs' official announcement.
The program's paramedics are trained to adeptly navigate a raft of healthcare needs, from managing chronic diseases to carrying out wellness checks and medication management. They even conduct health screenings to ensure that at-risk individuals or those struggling to access healthcare in Sandy Springs don’t slip through the cracks. These community paramedics are more than just first responders; they're a bridge to a sustainable health service for those most in need.
Moreover, the Community Paramedicine Program will seamlessly join forces with “RightSite,” Sandy Springs' telehealth service launched the previous year. This service provides remote consultations for patients who might otherwise needlessly call 911 for non-acute medical issues, a true innovation for the city's healthcare system. It's healthcare reimagined, leveraging technology to responsibly and effectively triage medical concerns in the digital age. Patients interested or in need of this cutting-edge service can refer to the city’s website for more information on the initiative, as detailed in their press release.
