Victor Lamar Orr, a 30-year-old Sarasota man, has been dealt a 10-year federal prison sentence for multiple offenses including drug trafficking and unlawful firearm possession, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday issued the sentence following Orr's guilty plea on November 26, 2024. The plea acknowledged possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances and two firearm-related offenses.
Orr's criminal activities and ensuing capture emerged from a series of chases documented by law enforcement. On May 25, 2022, Orr evaded a Manatee County Sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop, initiating a pursuit that spanned several counties. Orr's desperate flight included reckless maneuvers such as running red lights and driving on the wrong side of the road. At a field in Punta Gorda, Orr tossed a backpack that was later recovered by deputies and found to contain a Glock pistol, drugs, and a digital scale.
The persistent tracking efforts of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, working alongside Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies, eventually led to Orr’s capture. Their surveillance operation continued on August 5, 2022, as they observed Orr and associates at a clothing store before nabbing them when they returned to their vehicle. Inside the vehicle, another cache of firearms and drugs was discovered. "DNA analysis determined that Orr’s DNA was consistent with DNA on the firearm found inside the backpack," as U.S. Attorney's Office detailed, thus connecting him to the items discarded during his initial escape.
This case was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte County Sheriff’s Offices; with Assistant United States Attorneys Michael Sinacore and David Chee leading the prosecution. It falls under the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime across communities through strategic enforcement and community engagement.
