Saugatuck Brewing Company, a Michigan brewing company, has announced the closure of its Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo locations as of this week. Saugatuck Brewing's CEO John Miller announced that while they believe "in brewing great beer," they are going to outright shift their focus towards distribution in lieu of maintaining these two taprooms, as reported by FOX 17.
Reportedly, the Grand Rapids location has closed its doors immediately, whereas the Kalamazoo taproom, which was engulfed by fire last August, will not be reopening at all. According to Miller, in a statement obtained by MLive, the closures stem from a "challenging time" for the craft beer industry. However, further details regarding the nature of these challenges or the number of job losses resulting from the taproom closures weren't provided.
The Douglas site will remain operational, as the company strives to amplify its reach across the beer distribution map. The expansion into 13 states and seven countries, indicated by Saugatuck Brewing, reflects a larger ongoing trend as breweries recalibrate strategies towards wider market proliferation. The Grand Rapids taproom, sitting at 1504 Plainfield Ave. NE, was originally purchased in 2021 from Creston Brewery, which itself closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Saugatuck's Kalamazoo taproom had made its home at 200 E. Michigan Ave., which was known as the Olde Peninsula Brewpub and Restaurant before its closure in 2021.
While this marks a significant shift in Saugatuck Brewing's operations, the CEO made sure to acknowledge those behind the scenes. "Our team has poured so much love and care into creating memorable experiences for our guests," Miller told WWMT. He emphasized the company's commitment to supporting its staff through the transition. Saugatuck Brewing Company has expressed gratitude towards the communities and patrons in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, recognizing the importance of these now-closed establishments. Miller asserted that the memory of the taprooms will continue to inform their mission "to bring people together over great beer, no matter where they are."
